Tuesday, June 29

Holy crap, it's almost July!! Walter asked me tonight if I was anxious to get home. I said yeah, but it's not the only thing on my mind. I love it here. I wish I could bring everything I miss from home here and stay. Today I had both my classes then went to a Chinese restaurant with Walter and Carola for lunch. It was really good. After that, I had to meet back at the school for a tour around Esting. It was hot, boring, and long. For two hours we walked around the town, it was fun though, talking with Abby and such. On the way home we stopped to get ice cream. I love how every store has a TV set up for the Fussball games. I got home and cooled off until Abby and I went to work out. It felt really good. I came home and ate corn on the cob, and it was suuuuuper fantastic. I almost cried it tasted so good. I talked to Walter and Carola a lot and we had a lot of fun. Now, I'm watching the guys play Super Smash Bros Brawl again over Skype. I showed it to Carola and she thought it was funny. I love it. I makes me feel like I'm there with them :D Good thing I already got my homework done.

Monday, June 28

I woke up really sore today, especially in my right knee and, of course, my butt. I had to walk to school slower than usual and it was not fun climbing the stairs. Halfway through class my Advil finally kicked in and I was okay for the rest of the day. After school I did my homework then Abby came over to trade pictures and music. At 2:30 we went to the Emmeringer Lake and layed out for two hours. The sun felt really nice. Abby came back home and was going to do homework but she needed to go home for dinner and use the internet. I ate a Doener with Carola and then have been talking to Robbie on Skype and doing Sudoku. I'm now currently watching Robbie, Darren, and Aaron play Super Smash Bros Brawl over Skype. I miss video games, playing and watching, so this is really awesome. The creators of Skype would probably cry at how I'm using their product. Anyway, I must go. Until tomorrow.

Friday
We had the day off of school today because it was one of our long weekends. Abby and I got up early and went to the Deutsches Museum. We got in for free because Walter knew someone there and he showed us around a lot of exhibits. We even got to go to the top of the museum and look out upon all of Munich. We were there for five hours and then left for the New Pinakothek. We were really tired from the museum, so we weren't looking forward to going to an art museum, but we had to go for a school assignment. The gallery turned out to be really cool and it was the type of art that both Abby and I liked. We got through it in an hour and then headed home. I fell asleep for two hours and then just lay in bed all night talking to Robbie on Skype. It was a good, relaxing evening, but now it is time for bed. Night night

Saturday
Another long, adventurous day. I got up early again and met Carola and Julia to head to the climb park. We rode the S-Bahn with a bunch of students and got off at the last stop on the S2. Hans was there to taxi the kids from the S-Bahn station to the park. We got there and got suited up in our harnesses and went through a short tutorial. I wish I could describe this place better. Basically, it was a bunch of trees that you climbed up into and went through various obstacles and then ziplined from tree to tree. There were several routes to choose and they varied in difficulty. We of course started at the easiest and worked our way through. It was so much fun. On the second course I was ziplining and got turned backwards so I was unable to run with it at the bottom and I slammed backwards into a tree (it had padding but it still hurt). I felt a little dizzy afterwords but it wore off and I seem to be fine now. The last course was super tough and super high. I would say that at the highest I was 20 meters up. The last thing I got to do was what was called the Flying Fox. You ziplined from one tree, to another, and then another, and then the ground. These lines were at least 20 meters long too. On the final line, I again got turned backwards and couldn't stop myself. I slid on my butt on the ground and tore my bright blue pants. It's easily fixable so I'm not too devastated. It was a lot of fun to do that with Abby and Christine. Christine was freaking out the whole time and it was really funny. Anyway, Hans drove us home so we wouldn't have to ride the S-Bahn and then I took a three hour nap. I woke up to Walter grilling and he had invited his girlfriend, son, his girlfriend, and Abby over for food. We ate and roasted marshmallows on the grill. Abby wore my clothes during dinner because the mosquitoes were terrible. We then went to a big festival/concert thing on the other side of town. We met up with Carola and her friends so it was nice to not be alone. There was a big barn with many long picnic tables and a live band. People were all standing on the benches and dancing. It was a good time. Abby and I walked home (it took 30 minutes) and we sang the whole time. I am totally exhausted from today, I can barely feel my body. Tomorrow I'm riding my bike with Walter to Munich. Wish me luck!

Sunday
Holy crap! What a day! I got to sleep in a little today (9:30) and then I had to get up and eat breakfast. Walter, his girlfriend, and I then packed up some food and our swim suits and headed out on our bike ride. I was a little disappointed that his girlfriend was coming only because she got the better bike and mine didn't really fit me well. We stopped after 20 minutes and took a short water break then continued on our way. After another 20 minutes we stopped at a lake to take a swim break. It felt really good, but I didn't stay in long because there were some large fish swimming around and it creeped me out. We then rode for another half hour and got to Munich. We ate at a beer garden and watched old people play a dice game. They were really funny. We rode to another beer garden to watch the Germany game. THEY WON!! I couldn't believe the score! It was fantastic. There's just so much spirit here. On the way to the game, my butt was hurting really bad. I'm used to a super comfy bike seat and more of a road bike. I was on a small, old, mountain bike that provided no cushion for my bum bum. So the long game was welcomed, even though we sat in the grass. We started heading back after the game and my butt hurt super bad. After we had gotten out of Munich, we stopped at another beer garden to get ice cream and I told Walter that I thought my butt was bruised. The rest of the ride back confirmed it. I couldn't sit directly on my seat. I had to either lean forward or back and it was still really painful. Everytime I hit a bump I had to stand up and let my legs absorb it. There were no shocks (or good ones that I could find) on this bike so I took every bump really hard. By the last 20 minutes I was crying I was in so much pain. Walter felt really bad. I explained that I would've been fine if I had my own bike from home. When we got home I ran to my room and just cried. After calming down I took a shower and did my homework. I have no idea how I'm gonna sit through class tomorrow. It hurts even to lay on my back. Anyway, I'll stop complaining about my butt and go to bed. I'm gonna take it easy tomorrow, I hope.

Mondays and Thursdays are the worst class wise. It's so hard to sit through both of my lectures without getting really antsy. I made it though. After class, Abby and I ate lunch and then went to Gernlinder Lake to relax and take pictures. We played on the playground equipment there and I got a pretty bad splinter in my finger. We headed out separate ways at dinner time then got back together at 8:00 to do homework. We ended up talking on Skype to Robbie all night and then having a shaving party in the tub. Abby left around 11 but came back a few minutes later. She had grabbed the bike key instead of her house key and was locked out of her house for the night. So now, Abby is sleeping on the couch. Tomorrow we're going to some museums so we can write some small essays about them, oh how fun. We'll see how this goes.

Tuesday:
Abby's family arrived in Munich so she is spending the day with them. So, in my all-alone-ness, I did my homework. I got all of it done plus some extra stuff we're supposed to be working on throughout the program. I wanted to go work out so I went, but after I got there I lost all motivation so I rode a stationary bike for half an hour then did some good stretching. At 7:30 I went with Abby, Hans, and Christine to the Stammtisch (group dinner). It was for our families as well, but Walter was at work and Carola had to much homework because she missed school that day. It was a lot of fun. Abby and I ate Wienerschnitzel and laughed at Hans' amazing jokes. On the walk back home, Abby and I raced. I totally would have won if she hadn't gotten a head start. We said goodnight then I headed to bed.

Another fantastic day today. The weather was finally warm!!! After school I went tot he grocery store with Walter and then we had lunch with Grandma and Grandpa. Walter made me drink a liter Raddler because he gave me a big souvenir stein and we had to christen it. I felt it about half way through. After lunch, Abby and I went to Munich to pick up her family. After breaking my shoe (my awesome sandals I got from TJ Maxx, I tripped on a sidewalk crack and it shoved the part between my toes back and broke the strap) we met her dad, brother, sister, and sister's boyfriend. We took them around to the English Gardens and other places they wouldn't be able to see on their other tours. We then brought them home on the S-Bahn to Abby's house. Christine and Hans prepared a huge BBQ and we ate lots then watched the game. DEUTSCHLAND WON!! It was so exciting. Esting is usually suuuuper quiet but not tonight. People where honking and blowing those horns and singing. It was fantastic. I have a test in the morning so I'd better go.

Thurs.-Mon. June 17-21

Sorry for such the big break in posts. I have been super busy lately.
Thursday:
Long day of classes because I had both of them. After school I ate and then Abby and I headed out to visit some churches so we could write an essay for Dr. Wilson. We got to the first one alright, once we found the right street out of Marienplatz, but then we kinda got lost on our way to the second one. We found a random church (which happened to be the one we were looking for, it was just listed under a different name) and it was really really pretty. It was baroque so it had all the gold, silver, and red decorations. After looking around, we tried to find the second church (little did we know we had just seen it). It started to rain and thunderstorm really badly. Th lightning was directly overhead and we only had a small, one-person umbrella for the both of us. After giving up on finding the church, we sloshed our way back the the S-Bahn station and went home. I was wet, hungry, and just wanted to snuggle in bed. So, after eating dinner, I changed, did my homework and then went to bed.

Friday:
Abby and I got to class on time and the sun was shining, for a while. It got really cold after class and we went to Dr. Wilson's to see her puppies that her host family had. They were so adorable. I went home and packed then took my stuff to Abby's. We packed together in her small suitcase so that we didn't have to worry about too much stuff for Nuremberg. We watched the Germany game at her house then headed to the S-Bahn to head to Munich. We met up with the group and got on our train to Nuremberg. It was waaaay over booked so we had to sit in between the cars on the floor. We met a couple from New Zealand, so it made the journey more bearable. We got off and walked our way from the train station to the other side of the city to our youth hostel. It was actually the old stable of the castle there converted into a hostel, so we were high up on the hill and could see the entire town. The climb up was pretty strenuous though. We set up our rooms and then were set free. We ate at a restaurant down the street from our hotel then wandered around and looked for some night life. We went to a bar and a club then half of us headed back for the night. I slept really well that night.

Saturday:
We met with Dr. Webber at 10:00 and took a small tour around old Nuremberg. We ended in the main market and were then set free to go on our own. I hung out with Abby, Haley, and Cameron. We shopped until we had to meet back up with Dr. Webber at 3:00 at the German Museum. We walked around for about an hour, saw lots of armless statues, then headed out to eat. Most of the restaurants were full and since we had eight people we had to wander to find one. We ended up at a small place where there wasn't a soul inside. We had a lot of fun and then headed back to the hostel. Abby, Haley, Ashlyn, and I all hung out in our room. We played cards, talked, painted our nails, ate, and just had a great time. We didn't go to bed until about 1:30. It was a great bonding experience.
Sunday:
Our second day in Nuremberg began and we met up with Dr. Webber at 10:30. We took a bus to the Dokumentationszentrum. It was an old building used by the Nazis that has now been turned into a museum. We walked through it, which took about an hour and a half, then went to the large stadium where Hitler made his speeches (the one that you see with the three large Nazi flags behind him) We caught the bus and then the train back the Munich. Abby and I actually got a seat this time and took a lot of funny pictures. Once back home, I ate dinner (spaghetti) then worked on my homework until bedtime.

Monday:
Today I got up on time and had eggs and bacon for breakfast. It wasn't raining but it was still cold. School was boring as always but I learned some cool stuff and Dr. Wilson's class is always a fun time. After school I ate lunch (sausages and mashed potatoes) and then headed to Abby's to do homework. We played with Eva a little then helped Julia create a Facebook account. Finally, we got to homework. I got most of mine done for both classes, I just have another short essay to write and more vocab words to find and define. At 6:00, Abby and I met up with Dr. Wilson and she took us to register at the local gym. It cost 23.50 Euro for a month when usually it's waaay more expensive. We then took an aerobics class called "Bauch, Bein, and Po" (Belly, Legs, and Butt). It was super fun. Abby and I have decided to go do something at the gym at least every weekday so that we get our money's worth. I'm now back home and trying to catch up on all my blogging and journaling, then it's time for more homework. Later

Wednesday, June 16

Ugh, will it ever stop raining?!?! I am getting so restless because all I can do all day is homework and watch Fussball. Today I literally went to school then lay in bed all day doing homework and sudoku and talking to Robbie. I watched the Spain-Switzerland game with Walter then he got a pizza for Carola and me. I had to interview them about the German school system and what Carola wanted to do as a job. She said she wasn't sure, she just didn't want to sit in an office in front of the computer all day. Then Walter proceeded to say she'll be on Germany's Next Top Model. He's always cracking jokes. I watched half of the South Africa-Uruguay game and now I'm ready for bed. This week has been so slow. It's supposed to rain the rest of the week and through the whole weekend. On Friday, the group is going to Nuernburg until Sunday. That should be fun, I hope. It's something to do at least. Anyway, time to go. Later

Tuesday, June 15

Another cold, rainy day. I was very sleepy today in school. It was all I could do to stay awake. After class a bunch of us got ice cream then I sat around while Walter made lunch. We had these bread balls with mushroom sauce, it was very good. After eating, Walter and I went on an hour and a half motorcycle ride. We went to three big churches, or was it two?, and then to the lake that the river by our town runs into. I love riding on the motorcycle. We went on some curvy roads and threw some towns. The best thing about motorcycles, you can jump ahead in traffic jams and at lights. That, and going 140 km/h whenever possible. It was a little difficult today though because there was so much wind. My neck hurts from holding it up. We got home around four and my mom skype called me as soon as I woke up my computer. She got to talk to Walter and he told her he was taking care of me and making coffee. It was cute. I was very cold from the ride so coffee was very much welcomed. I sat around until dinner doing homework and talking to Robbie. After dinner I did homework with Abby and now I am talking on video skype with Robbie. I miss him. I'd better get some sleep because I've been so tired today. Night night!

Oh man, not a good night. I woke up at 4am and threw up twice. It was not fun. Walter was not home because he stayed overnight at a friends for the Fussball game and Carola was upstairs. After about 30 minutes, I felt better and was able to go back to sleep. I woke up on time for school and had a headache and stuffy nose. I went to school and when my teacher found out I got sick and Walter was not home she said, "What? Walter wasn't there? You should have called me!" It was funny. After coming home from school and eating lunch I went to take a nap for two hours. Walter woke me with peppermint tea fresh from his garden. It was super delicious. Later, we went to the supermarket to get dinner supplies. His wife came over and we had pork steak and ribs with potato salad. At eight, Abby and Hans came over to watch the Italy-Paraguay game. It was such a fun night. Abby and I were tired and slap-happy, so we were making up new words. We kept tickling each other and so we asked what the word was for tickle. It's kitzel, so we put that together with the word for war, krieg, and now we say Kitzelkrieg all the time and try to tickle each other. After the game I was super tired and Walter joked with Abby and Hans that every night he reads me a bed time story and I fall asleep. He then proceeded to get out his old Grimm's Fairytales book and read to Abby and me. We were laughing so hard. It's always so much fun when Walter, Hans, Abby and I are together. They teach us German vs. Bavaria words and we use them in our vocab books that we have to write everyday. Anyway, it is time to go. Until next time :D

Sunday, June 13

I woke up around 9:30 and ate a small breakfast after showering. Walter took me on a motorcycle ride to a friends house. Going 150 km/h on a motorcycle and weaving through traffic on a country road = super fun! After meeting his friend (who looked like Alec Baldwin) and his wife (who looked like every other German Frau) we came home to get Carola to go eat with the grandparents. It was Grandpa's 77th birthday. We went to a restaurant a few towns over and I had the world's best food. All I know that it was some kind of red meat and onions and I almost died because of how good it was. Then, for good luck, Walter, Grandpa, and I had a shot of Williamsbirne. Hoooly cow it burned. Walter said it was about 50% and I did get a little dizzy standing up. Germany is fun. I don't have alcohol everyday and when I do it's only a beer or a beer mixed with something else, but man that shot got me. Anyway, we came home after that and I waited for the Germany game. Carola invited me to go with her to a stadium in downtown Munich to a public viewing with her friends. We drew flags on our faces then headed out. The group ranged from 15-17 with me being the oldest. They were loud, rude, and typical German teenagers (aka they chain smoke like it's 1953) It rained all evening, but it's okay because the stadium has a big clear roof, which was cool because we could see it rain. The screen was smaller than I expected, but it was still better than my TV at home. I'm really bad with numbers so I can't really say how many people were there. It was soooo much fun. Each time Germany came close to scoring everyone jumped up and started screaming, and even if they missed, they still cheered and clapped. Everyone was also very respectful about Australia. We cheered with Germany's goalie did well but didn't make fun of the Australians. And then, the four times that Germany scored, man it was like a mad house. So much screaming and singing and hugging and it was just an amazing experience. It was still raining when we left so we were soaked by the time we got to the U-bahn (subway). Our spirits where high though. I'm so glad I got to experience a public viewing AND have Germany win their first game. It's going to be a fun Fussball season :D

Saturday, July 12

I woke up today around 11 after my crazy night in Munich and had breakfast with Carola and her boyfriend. He was cracking up at Walter's English. At one point Walter said, "An apple each day, kept ze doctor avay." It was so adorable. There were strawberries on the table and I asked Carola and Flo if they ate them with Nutella. They said no so I explained that my family ate almost every fruit with Nutella. They thought it was really funny. The two of them left soon after eating because Flo had a soccer game and Carola went to watch. Around 1, Walter left for work so I was all alone for a couple hours. I watched Fussball and rinsed out some tshirts in the sink and dried them so I would have to wash them. Around 3, Abby came over and we watched the end of the Nigeria-Argentina game. My downstairs neighbors were out of town so their son was throwing a house party. There were about 10 kids raging in age from 13-18 and they started drinking around 1:30. They were totally wasted by 4 and Abby and I where having a fun time listening to them. They also had a hookah set up and were doing that as well. At six, I grilled pork for Abby and me (Walter had showed me how to use the electric grill) and the whole time we were eating they were bugging us to come down. They kept going "Hey! Americans! Come down here!" So, after we ate we went downstairs for about 20 minutes just to meet them and laugh at their drunkenness. They were all totally gone. Luckily, we had somewhere to be at eight so it gave us an excuse to leave. We met the group two towns over at a bar that was having a public viewing of the USA-England game. I had a Weissbier (white beer) and cheered along with everyone. As soon as it was done, Abby and I came home and went to bed. Everyday here I have more and more fun, and it's only the first week!! Best. Summer. Ever!

Finally, an update! (I'll get better at this, I promise)

Tuesday, June 8
I only got about an hour of sleep on the plane. The lady in front of me had her chair back all the way and I could not lean mine back because the man behind me was seven feet tall. I tried at the beginning of the flight but he told me I was crushing his knees. So I was forced to find creative ways to sleep. We got to Germany half an hour early, which was nice for my seat partner. Her layover was originally an hour and a half with having to go through customs, but then she had two. We met with the "wonderful" Dr. Webber and headed to the train. I already wanted to kill him. I tried Chardonnay wine and a carbonated apple juice called Apfel-schorle. My host sister and Abby's host mom picked us up from the restaurant and headed to our houses. I was fine until I started unpacking, then I lost it. I cried for an hour then slept for two. Abby and her host mom came over and Abby kept hugging me when I cried. Then my host dad showed me were the school was. ON the way back we stopped at a small market to get dinner supplies. We ate hamburgers. I can see Abby's house from my balcony. Walter and I are going over soon to hang out. I can already feel my German improving. It's actually kind of hard to write in English. That is all for now.

I woke up early today around seven. The morning was so beautiful. It was sunny and cool with a slight breeze. I ate breakfast with Walter and the mom. I for get her name. At 10:15, Abby and I walked to school. I came home at one and ate pea soup with Carola then met with the group to go to Munich. I was hot but fun. Abby and I didn't stay to drink with the group. Instead we went shopping at H&M. I got a pretty purple dress. Now I am relaxing and I'm hungry. I didn't eat dinner because 1. Walter is working 2. Carola already ate and 3. I was not hungry. Maybe I'll munch on a few chips here soon. Abby, Hayley, and I got ice cream in Munich. It was so good. I had a scoop of raspberry and a scoop of chocolate. I'm so tired. I'm not sure what I'm going to do after classes tomorrow. I think Carola wants to go swimming this weekend...if i understood her correctly. Anyway, I need to get some sleep.

First day of classes! I got up around 7:30 and got ready for the day. For breakfast, I had a pear, a roll (one half with Nutella and the other with honey. I can't eat that much Nutella on bread, sticky mouth) a big pretzel and coffee. During class I became really stressed because we just kept getting more and more homework. After class I ate lunch (noodles with cheese and onions, peas, and Spezi) then went to Abby's house. We were supposed to go swimming with the group but they never called so we went alone. It was so interesting. There were old men in Speedos and really young girls with no tops. It seems that here a girl can go without a swim top until about six years old. It's just what they do here. Also, young kids change their clothes in front of everyone. There was also an old man who kept wrapping a towel around his waist and switching back and forth between two Speedos. Apparently on is for swimming and one is for laying out. We went home around six and I ate leftovers from lunch for dinner. I talked to Carola about American tv shows she liked; Simpsons, Family Guy, Scrubs, etc. Then I did my homework while talking to Robbie. I'm super tired. Every evening I'm just ready to pass out. I think it's because I have to think so hard all day, that and I have to walk everywhere. I'm going to bed now. Night

I woke up tired this morning for the first time. I'm not usually tired until after class. I only had one today. Burkon's class meets every day but Wilson's class is only on Monday and Thursday. When I got home I went for a five minute swim with Walter. I just have to get over the fact that men wear Speedos, it was fine until it was Walter. We then ate lunch which was fried pork and fries. Abby came over and we did homework while watching the opening ceremonies for the World Cup. She went home around four so I took a short nap before getting ready to head to Munich. We met everyone at seven at the train station. We got off in downtown Munich and ate dinner at a small restaurant. It was a lot of fun. I had some kind of pork, spinach noodles, and a Raddler (beer with lemonade). Things started to get crappy after that. We had a group of nine and everyone wanted to do something different. Brad wanted to bar hop, Greg wanted to find a disco, Sam wanted to chill and drink, Emily and Elizabeth wanted to find boys, etc. So, for two hours we wandered around and only stopped at one bar. I didn't have anything there. So my total for the night was half a beer. Anyway, around 11:30, Abby and I left the group and headed home. I find it simple to navigate the U- and S- bahns. I miss everyone back home so much, but I wouldn't trade this fun experience for anything. Everything here is amazing. I want to come back next summer. My feet hurt a lot so I'm gonna go lay down. Goodnight.

From Monday June 7

Monday, June 7
My trip has gotten off to a fantastic start. I woke up today ready to travel. Mom and Robbie accompanied me to the Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky Airport where we met up with other members of my group. At one o’clock I bid my farewells and made my way through security. It was the same drill as always; took off shoes and jacket, took laptop out of messenger bag, sent personal items through scanner and then walked through detectors. I always hate having to put my shoes back on. It is so difficult to do so standing in the middle of an airport. In any case, Emily, Abby, and I made it to the gate where we relaxed for an hour before boarding our United Express plane. I was able to take a short, twenty-minute nap between being served a Diet Coke and landing in Chicago. The group had a two hour layover at O’Hare so we ate a small dinner (I had a soft pretzel, for I was not terribly hungry) and waited to board our Boeing 777 plane to Germany. I was lucky enough to receive an aisle seat next to a girl of my age. She is heading to Poland to study there. In all it has been a good flight. I ate chicken and rice for dinner and now I am filling out all of my journals and blogs for today. The only bad things have been that there is a young child on this plane who keeps crying. I can tell the other patrons are becoming annoyed for it is nearing sleeping time. In fact, once I finish this post, I myself will take a rest. The second issue has been the turbulence we experienced when leaving the land to fly over water. That Canadian wind is mean! Anywho, it is time to sleep, for I will be landing in Munich in about five hours.
